The Lottery by Patricia Wood

Lottery by Patricia Wood (October, 2007)
The likeable narrator of this novel is 32-year-old Perry Crandell who has an IQ of 76, but is not retarded, as he would like you to know. Perry lives with his grandmother Gram who helps him cope with life, spouting her gems of folk wisdom. Gram has taught him how to survive, how to write everything down, and how to play the lottery every week. When Gram dies, Perry’s family swoops in and swindles him out of his share of Gram’s inheritance. But when he wins $12 million in the Washington State Lottery, suddenly everyone pays attention to him. Perry holds his own as he continues his job at the marine supply store, falls for the local convenience store clerk, and figures out what is most important in his life. This is an appealing book about love, trust, and living with the cards life has dealt.
